The annual Waukegan Invaders youth track meet will be held Saturday at Waukegan High School’s football field on Lewis Avenue. The meet should start at 9:30 a.m. and will feature the Invaders track club, runners from the Waukegan Park District program, and other age-group runners from throughout the area.
This will be the Invaders’ final event of the summer. The team, headed by Ken Almond and Donna Levy, just competed in the United States Track and Field-sanctioned Junior Olympics in Houston, which was the age-group national championships for USATF runners.
The two Invaders who earned top-eight medals at nationals were Emma Milburn in the girls 15-16 age group and Peyton Erdal in the boys 9-10 age group. Both competed in the 1,500-meter run.
The Invaders qualified a small army of runners for nationals, and several of them ran personal-best times, even though the temperature in the Houston area in July makes Lake County feel like snow is on the way.
Among those setting personal records, were Caleb Levy (10th in the 1,500 run in the boys 9-10 age group), Mariah Palmer in the 800 in the 8-under division, and Zion Levy — Caleb’s twin sister — who was 12th in the 1,500 in the girls 9-10 age group.
Also setting personal-best times were the Invaders’ 13-14 boys 1,600 relay team of Donovan Perkins, Jeremy Peel, Napoleon Coleman and Cody Canegan; and the boys 15-16 3,200 relay team of Thomas Mosley, Julian Ruiz, Humberto Villarreal and Jacob Unze.
